asked the Minister for the Civil Service whether research is to be restarted into the two clusters of women whose children have birth defects in Runcorn and Manchester.

For the reasons given in my recent replies to the hon. Member for Derby, South (Mrs. Beckett) research concerning women civil servants operating VDUs in Runcorn is not being continued.

asked the Minister for the Civil Service why the decision was taken to stop research into the cluster of confirmed birth defects at the Department of Employment, Runcorn.

For the reasons given in my recent replies to the hon. Member for Derby, South (Mrs. Beckett), research in VDU usage in the Department of Employment, Runcorn is not continuing. No clustering of birth defects has been confirmed.
