HC Deb 07 March 1985 vol 74 c556W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many babies were refused a place in the mother and baby units at Holloway, Styal and Askham Grange prisons in 1983 and 1984, respectively; what were the reasons for the refusal; and what subsequently happened to the babies.

Mr. Mellor

In 1983, four babies were refused admission to the unit at Holloway, two because of the length of their mothers' sentences and two because the unit was full. Two of the babies were taken into care, one remained with its grandmother and one remained with an aunt.

In 1984, three babies were refused admission to the unit at Holloway, one because of the length of the mother's sentence and two because the unit was full. Two babies remained with their grandparents and one remained with a friend of the mother.

There is no record of any babies being refused admission to the units at Styal or Askham Grange during 1983 or 1984.
