HC Deb 05 March 1985 vol 74 c439W
Mr. David Atkinson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what opportunities exist for category A prisoners to acquire skills and knowledge whilst in prison.

Mr. Mellor

The opportunities for category A prisoners to acquire skills and knowledge during their imprisonment are broadly the same as those available to other prisoners. They include tuition in literacy and numeracy in a life and social skills context; in academic education to GCE and other public examination levels, including University degrees; in vocational training; and in recreational activities. Library facilities are also available. Skills and knowledge may also be acquired in workshops and kitchens, and in physical education and the maintenance of grounds and buildings.
