Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what figure per capita of the tax-paying population was represented by the financial contribution made by the United Kingdom to the European Economic Community in each of the years since such contributions commenced.

Mr. Moore

[pursuant to his reply, 27 February 1985, c. 212]: The United Kingdom's contributions (after refunds) per capita of the tax-paying population between the financial years 1973–74 and 1983–84 are as follows:

The Community is financed largely from VAT, Customs duties and levies which are borne by consumers. Therefore, the answer is based on United Kingdom population excluding children under 16.
