Mr. Austin Mitchell

asked the Prime Minister whether she will publish in the Official Report a table showing output per head for the whole working population for the latest 12 months for which figures are available as a percentage of 1973 and 1979; and if she will provide similar figures excluding the production of oil and gas.

The Prime Minister

Figures of output per head in the United Kingdom are usually published on the basis of numbers employed, that is, employees in employment plus self-employed persons. The working population includes the claimant unemployed. An output per head series compiled on the definition requested for the whole economy is shown below. As there is no way of allocating all the unemployed to individual industries, it is not possible to compile figures on this definition below whole economy level.
