asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if it remains his policy to preserve the real value of the widow's allowance.

Mr. Newton

Under section 125 of the Social Security Act 1975 the Secretary of State has a duty to uprate widow's allowance annually in line with the rise in prices. The Government stand by their pledge to protect widow's allowance—along with retirement pension and linked long-term benefits—against inflation.
