§ Mr. McCrindleasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will introduce legislation to confer upon local authorities the power to control and regulate car boot sales.
§ Mr. MacfarlaneThe General Development Order 1977 allows the use of land for car boot sales for up to 14 days in total in any calendar year. However, in any particular case a local planning authority may, by the making of a direction under article 4 of the order, withdraw this general permission, and thus bring the activity concerned within normal planning control. For such a direction to remain in force for longer than six months the Secretary of State's approval is required.
