HC Deb 18 June 1985 vol 81 c107W
44. Mr. Geraint Howells

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what consideration was given to the relaxation of the earnings rule for pensioners in the course of the review of social security.

Mr. Newton

Consideration was given to the future of the earnings rule for pensioners during the social security review. The Government's conclusion is reported in chapter 1 of volume 2 of the Green Paper on the "Reform of Social Security" (Cmnd. 9518). Paragraph 1.69 reaffirms the commitment to abolish the earnings rule at the earliest opportunity when resources permit.
