HC Deb 18 June 1985 vol 81 c106W
38. Mr. Donald Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what new plans his Department has for ending discrimination against disabled people.

Mr. Newton

The Government's approach rests on a wide range of positive measures to promote wider understanding of the needs of disabled people and to promote greater opportunities for them. The Government have continued to do this both through legislative means and through efforts to increase awareness of disabled people's abilities. Recent examples are the amendment to the Building Regulations to ensure adequate access for disabled people in certain new buildings, which comes into force this August; and the code of good practice on the employment of disabled people, launched last November by my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister.
