Mr. John Fraser

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) how many people are now receiving housing benefit in the London borough of Lambeth giving separate certificated and standard benefits and rent rebate, rate rebate and housing allowance;

(2) what payments have been made by his Department to Lambeth council for rate rebates in 1984-85 and since 1 April.

London borough of Lambeth estimates that in 1985–86 the numbers receiving rent rebate, rent allowance and late rebates would be:

Lambeth was paid subsidy of £24.6 million by I his Department for rate rebates awarded in 1984–85 No payments of rate rebate subsidy have been made to Lambeth since 1 April since rate rebates are not payable under the housing benefits scheme when an authority has not set a rate
