§ Mr. John Patten[pursuant to his reply 6 June 1985, c 234] There have not been any changes since 1979 in the collection of such statistics in the Department, which are limited to sample information on hospital in patients and to mortality data, both held at the Office of Population, Censuses and Surveys
The steering group on health services information examined accident statistics in general as part of its review of information about hospital clinical activity in the National Health Service Its recommendations on the subject were published in 1982 in the group's first report The group recommended that accident and emergency departments with computerised information systems should collect more detailed information on patients seen For all patients who are admitted to hospitals after an accident, the group has recommended the use of the 'E' codes of the ninth revision of the international classification of diseases which record the direct physical cause of an accident and where it occurred Health authorities have been asked to plan on the basis that this, and other recommendations in the first report should be implemented by April 1987
