asked the Secretary of State for Defence when, and at what cost, the dog training school at RAF Newton was constructed.

Mr. Lee

The dog training section of the RAF police school moved to RAF Newton in 1975. The school was able to make use of a number of existing buildings. Apart from some minor works services, a little under £0.5 million. At 1975 prices was spent on the construction of accommodation for the dog section.

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if a decision has yet been made to amalgamate the Army and RAF dog training schools at Melton Mowbray or at RAF Newton.

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what area of land is calculated to be needed to provide effectively for an amalgamated dog training unit without causing environmental problems for residents.

Mr. Lee

It is estimated that 985 acres of land are required for an amalgamated dog training school. This figure includes 400 acres needed to train dogs in long-range windscenting. No environmental problems are anticipated.
