HC Deb 03 June 1985 vol 80 cc18-9W
Mr. Kaufman

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will provide a breakdown of divisional crime statistics for the city of Manchester by offence, recorded and detected, for each year from 1975.

Mr. Mellor

Information about offences recorded and cleared-up by police forces other than the Metropolitan police is available centrally by police force area only. Statistics of offences recorded by each police force are published annually in "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales" (table 2.4 of the volume for 1983, Cmnd. 9349). Corresponding information for 1984 was published in table 6 of Home Office Statistical Bulletin 6/85 on 12 March 1985.

The number of notifiable offences recorded by Greater Manchester police which were cleared up in each of the years 1975–84 is given in the following table. The number of offences cleared up may be affected by variations in police recording practices. Offences cleared up in one year may include offences initially recorded in previous years.

Number of offences cleared up
Number
1975 70,700
1976 69,600
1977 71,900
1978 69,200
1979 72,800
1980* 76,300
1981* 85,600
1982* 92,700
1983* 85,500
1984* 69,000
* Figures for 1980 onwards may not be directly comparable with those for previous years because of changes to improve the recording of multiple, continuous and repeated offences.

Mr. Kaufman

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many convictions there were for damage to municipal property in the city of Manchester in each year since 1975.

Mr. Mellor

Information collected centrally does not distinguish damage to municipal property from other offencs of criminal damage.
