HC Deb 26 July 1985 vol 83 c792W
Mr. Sheerman

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make representations to the Government of the United States of America seeking measures to prevent the Union Jack being used as a trademark and advertising logo for goods made in South Korea and marketed in the United States of America.

Mr. Pattie

Under the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, the United States of America and Republic of Korea are obliged to prohibit the use of national flags as trade marks without authorisation. If the hon. Member is able to provide specific instances of such use of the Union Jack, officials will take appropriate action.

Mr. Sheerman

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make representations to the Government of the United States of America about measures to prevent South Korean goods being fraudulently marketed in the United States of America as having been made in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Channon

In cases where South Korean goods are known to be fraudulently marketed as having been made in the United Kingdom representations are made to the Korean authorities. If there were known to be cases arising of such goods being sold in the United States of America the United States authorities would also be alerted.
