Mr. Merchant

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) what was the cost to the Government in the fiscal years 1979–80 to 1984–85 of (a) mortgage interest relief, (b) tax allowances on pension contributions, (c) regional subsidies, (d) enterprise zones (rates and tax reliefs) and (e) the business expansion scheme (business start-up scheme), respectively;

(2) what was total Government expenditure as a percentage of gross domestic product in each of the years from 1979–80 to 1984–85; and what proportion (a) mortgage interest relief, (b) tax allowances on pension contributions, (c) regional subsidies, (d) rates and tax relief, associated with enterprise zones and (e) the business expansion scheme or business start-up scheme, represent, respectively, of the total.
