HC Deb 22 July 1985 vol 83 cc395-7W
Mr. Dewar

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish a table showing the components of change such as openings, expansions, contractions and closures in terms of male and female employment and number of units in the electronic sector since 1979 (a) for Scotland as a whole and (b) for each of the Scottish regions.

Mr. George Younger

[pursuant to his reply, 4 July 1985, c. 256]: The only available source for components of change analysis is the regional data system (RDS) which relates to units with 11 or more employees and classifies units according to their latest current activity. Estimates from RDS are set out in the table, for the electronics sector; they relate to the 1980 standard industrial classification. Details by sex are not available.

The reclassification of units under RDS into the electronics industry, as the balance of their production has moved in favour of electronics, has had the effect of boosting the 1979 figure shown in the table. By way of illustration estimated employment for the electronics sector from the 1978 census of employment was 37,000

Notes

(1) The electronics sector is defined to be Activity Headings 3302, 3433, 3441, 3442, 3443, 3444, 3453, 3454, 3710 and 3732 of the 1980 Standard Industrial Classification.

(2) The industry classification of a unit may change over time. For the purpose of the tables above, a unit is classified on the bases of its latest known industry. This convention will tend to overstate electronics in 1979 in view of the tendency of units to be reclassified into the electronics sector.

(3) The above estimates are derived from the Regional Data System.
