§ Mr. Burtasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer when he will be consulting the representative bodies of the various groups of societies for which the registry of friendly societies is responsible about the proposed fees to recover its full costs.
§ Mr. Ian StewartThe Government have already indicated in the Green Paper "Building Societies: A New Framework" that the registry's powers to charge fees should be extended so that it can recover its full costs from the groups of societies for which it is responsible. The necessary provision for charges to building societies will be included in the forthcoming building society legislation. The Government are considering whether to include provisions in respect of the other groups of societies in the same legislation or whether to provide for it when there is next legislation affecting other groups of societies. I can assure my lion. Friend that before the orders setting out the fee scales are drafted, there will be consultations on the structure of the scales required to achieve the objective of full recovery of costs in respect of each group.
