asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what estimates he has made of the likely

effects on the quality of patient care in the National Health Service of his proposed arrangements for financing the recent pay awards for medical and nursing staff.

Mr. John MacKay

It should be possible for health boards to meet the full cost of pay awards to medical and nursing staff this year from within the resources made available to them, without affecting services to patients.
