asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many permanent new buildings were started in the public sector during the last six months of 1984; and how this compares with the last six months of 1979.

The values of new orders received by contractors for public building and civil engineering work in Great Britain at 1980 prices were £1,770 million and £1,950 million respectively for the five months July to November 1979 and 1984. December information is not yet available for 1984.
