§ Mr. David Atkinsonasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on progress towards the introduction of legislation to replace the Cruely to Animals Act 1876 following the publication of the White Paper in May 1983.
§ Mr. MellorWe have made considerable progress since the publication of the White Paper. Extensive consultations have been held with interested parties, and aspects of the proposals have been tested, refined and developed. We hope shortly to issue further information on developments in policy. It remains our firm intention to introduce new legislation at the earliest possible opportunity, and we shall be ready to do so as soon as that opportunity occurs.
