asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether he will introduce legislation to require rear seat belts to be installed for the protection of passengers in taxi cabs, minicabs, hire cars and in cars for hire or rental, respectively.

As I have made clear to hon. Members before, no decision will be taken on the fitting of rear seat belts until the Select Committee on Transport has made its report. We have no plans to single out hire cars and taxis for special treatment.
