§ Mr. Dalyellasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the future of photosynthesis research at the Welsh plant breeding research establishment.
§ Mr. BrookeThe Welsh plant breeding station is an institute of the Agricultural and Food Research Council which receives a grant-in-aid from the Department's science budget. The work on photosynthesis at the station forms part of the Agricultural and Food Research Service's co-ordinated programme of research in this area. I understand that the AFRC attaches high priority to that programme. The work at the WPBS relates to grassland and in particular to the effects of low temperature, a topic of some importance in the United Kingdom.
