§ Mr. Nicholas Bakerasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what steps are currently being taken to supply food for Ethiopian refugees in the Sudan (a) by the United Kingdom and (b) by the members of the European Economic Community.
§ Mr. RaisonThe figures available for commitments of emergency food aid to Sudan do not distinguish between aid for Sudanese and aid provided for refugees, except where the intended channel is UNHCR; and, in the latter case, do not distinguish between Ethiopian and other refugees.
The Government have this year provided 15,000 tonnes of grain through the World Food Programme, which has been delivered to Port Sudan, and pledged a further 30,000 tonnes, including about 13,000 tonnes of wheatflour for UNHCR's programmes in Sudan.
The European Community has made grants of £4.5 million to UNHCR to buy food and other supplies, and is supplying 25,000 tonnes of cereals through international and voluntary organisations, and discussing with the Government of Sudan the distribution of a further 26,000 tonnes.
Other member states of the Community have so far pledged a total of 83,000 tonnes of cereals.
