HC Deb 25 February 1985 vol 74 cc34-5W
Mr. Best

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent representations he has received about the application of human rights in Nigeria; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Rifkind

Representations received have been few and concern individuals detained for an excessive period without being charged or brought to trial. Particular concern has been expressed about the case of Professor Ishaya Audu, the former Nigerian Minister of External Affairs. There have been encouraging recent developments: 250 persons detained without charge were released on 1 October 1984 and a further 144 on 1 January 1985.
