§ Mr. Kenneth Clarke[pursuant to his reply, 28 January 1985, c. 55]: I have received the following up-to-date information on the eight contracts which replaces that in my reply of 23 July 1984:
District Annual savings £ Leeds Western * 30,000 East Surrey *157,000 Maidstone *140,000 Medway †357,000 Bromleyr ‡ 53,000 Merton and Sutton ‡126,000 North Warwickshire ‡ 70,000 North-West Surrey ‡ 50,000 * These are all new services. The savings figures are derived from comparison with in-house bids. † Some work is being undertaken by a contractor and some by the in-house organisation. The total savings are derived from a comparison with previous estimated costs. ‡ The savings are derived from comparison with previous estimated costs. I apologise that some of the previous information was incorrect, but it was based on the best information available to us at the time. The hon. Member will note that these eight examples between them are providing annual savings of £983,000 a year.
