Mr. Foulkes

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many officials, and at what grade and salary, within his Department have responsibility for dealing with all aspects of the European Community.

The following staff are employed in the diplomatic wing of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London on European Community matters:

The work of the two Departments concerned is supervised by an assistant under-secretary (which equates to Home Civil Service 3, formerly under-secretary) on a salary of £30,800. Two deputy under-secretary's (which equate to Home Civil Service 2, formerly deputy secretary) devote approximately one third each of their time to European Community matters amongst other duties.
