Mr. Foulkes

asked the Prime Minister if she will list all meetings held between Ministers and members of the Chilean Government and military since April 1982; and what was the purpose of each meeting.

The Prime Minister

[pursuant to her reply, 28 January 1985, c. 23.]:

  1. (a) The visit to Chile in September 1982 of the then. Minister for Trade, my right hon. and learned Friend the Member for Dover (Mr. Rees), to review commercial relations.
  2. (b) A brief courtesy call on the then Minister of State for Defence Procurement, my hon. Friend the Member for Chertsey and Walton (Mr. Pattie), during the service visit of General Matthei, the commander-in-chief of the Chilean air force in March 1983.
  3. (c) Farewell ministerial calls in March 1983 by the outgoing Chilean ambassador, consequent upon his appointment as Chilean Minister for Foreign Affairs.
  4. (d) Visit to Chile in April 1983 by the then Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, my hon. Friend the Member for Woking (Mr. Onslow) to review our bilateral relations.
  5. (e) Meetings between the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary and the Chilean Foreign Minister at the United Nations General Assembly in 1982, 1983 and 1984 as part of the normal series of bilateral meetings between Foreign Ministers on these occasions.
  6. (f) A meeting between the then Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my hon. Friend the Member for Wycombe (Mr. Whitney), and the Chilean Foreign Minister, as part of the series of courtesy meetings between foreign representatives to the inauguration of the new President of Ecuador, in August 1984.
