HC Deb 04 February 1985 vol 72 c376W
Mr. Cohen

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what were the reasons for the increase in experiments on living animals in 1983 over 1982 of 23 per cent. in household chemicals experiments.

Mr. Mellor

Experiments with household substances are performed for the purpose of safety testing. The increase in the number of experiments in 1983 reflects a greater need for such tests. The total number of experiments with household substances, however, remains a very small proportion of the total, ie 17,153 out of 3.6 million in 1983 (less than half of one per cent.).
