asked the Paymaster General if he will seek to encourage local authorities to become more involved in local enterprise agencies.

I am anxious to see local authorities support their local enterprise agencies, but this is a decision which rests with them. I would not like to see local authorities reduce their support as a result of the recently announced new funding scheme for local enterprise agencies. The strength of the local enterprise agency movement lies in the fact that they are a partnership of local interests both private and public. This is the reason why they are so successful.
