HC Deb 11 December 1985 vol 88 cc645-6W
Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many cases have been brought to his attention concerning alleged assaults by officers on inmates in youth detention centres and prisons; and what action he has taken as a result of such complaints.

Mr. Mellor

Statistics of allegations are not collected centrally and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. All allegations of assaults by officers on inmates in prison department establishments are investigated, at the appropriate level and whenever a criminal offence may have been committed the matter is referred to the police.

Mrs. Renée Short

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many officers in youth detention centres and prisons have been suspended from duty or dismissed during the last five years; and what were the reasons for their suspension or dismissal.

Mr. Mellor

Since 1 January 1981, nine officers serving in prison department young offender estalishments have been dismissed (five following convictions for criminal offences; four for internal disciplinary reasons) and 23 suspended for a range of managerial reasons.
