§ Mr. MellorStatistics of allegations are not collected centrally and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. All allegations of assaults by officers on inmates in prison department establishments are investigated, at the appropriate level and whenever a criminal offence may have been committed the matter is referred to the police.

§ Mr. MellorSince 1 January 1981, nine officers serving in prison department young offender estalishments646W have been dismissed (five following convictions for criminal offences; four for internal disciplinary reasons) and 23 suspended for a range of managerial reasons.
