Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many young people under 18 years of age were in detention centres at the latest available date; how many were in youth custody; and what was the average cost of a detention centre place and a youth custody place, respectively, at the latest available date.

Mr. Mellor

According to the records held centrally, on 30 September 1985 there were about 690 persons aged under 18 in detention centres, about 1,140 in closed youth custody centres and 280 in open youth custody centres. In addition, about 250 youth custody trainees aged under 18 were being held in prisons and remand centres. The estimated average weekly cost per inmate for 1984–85 was £334 for detention centres, £260 for closed youth custody centres and £294 for open youth custody centres.
