§ Mr. Randallasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is satisfied that the common fisheries policy control system is currently working fully in the interests of the British fishing fleet; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Gummer[pursuant to his reply, 6 December 1985: I am satisfied that it is in the interests of the British fishing fleet that the rules of the common fisheries policy as agreed in 1983 should be fully applied and enforced throughout the Community. As a result of the work of the Commission's inspectorate of inspectorates it is clear that substantial progress has been made in tightening up control arrangements in all Member states. But there is inevitably room for further improvement at this stage and I am satisfied that the Commission are working to achieve this. The United Kingdom will continue to be at the forefront of those seeking effective control.
