asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the ratio of (a) hospital beds and (b) qualified nurses per head of population in (i) Wales and (ii) England.

In 1983, the latest year for which information is available, there were on average 7.3 beds available daily in National Health Service hospitals per thousand population in England and 8 in Wales. On 30 September 1983 there were 4.77 qualified nursing and midwifery staff (excluding agency staff) whole-time equivalent per thousand population in England and 5.35 in Wales.
