HL Deb 17 April 1985 vol 462 c793WA
Lord Houghton of Sowerby

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What progress has been made so far in persuading sporting fishermen to forsake the use of lead weights and so reduce the number of deaths of swans.

Lord Skelmersdale

Evidence from the last fishing season—the first in which non-toxic alternatives to lead became generally available—indicates that substitute weights were not taken up widely. After the widespread publicity of the last month, we have reasonable hopes that in the forthcoming season the alternatives will be more extensively used.
