HC Deb 31 October 1984 vol 65 cc1115-6W
Mr. Cohen

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement on standards of military discipline, and on the number and circumstances of breakdowns, in connection with Operation Lionheart

Mr. Butler

The standard of military discipline was excellent throughout Exercise Lionheart. There were some individual incidents which may result in disciplinary action and these are currently being investigated in the normal way by the Royal Military Police. It would not, of course, be appropriate to comment on them.

Mr. Cohen

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many (a) deaths and (b) serious injuries were suffered by participants in Operation Lionheart; and if he will make a statement on the circumstances in each case.

Mr. Butler

Three Service personnel died during Exercise Lionheart and details of the circumstances of these cases are given in the interim report on the exercise that has now been placed in the Library of the House. In addition, there were seven serious hospital cases.
