§ Mr. Kilroy-Silkasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the number of people in prison per 100,000 population in each country in the European Economic Community.
§ Mr. MellorSuch ratios are now published twice a year by the Council of Europe in thePrison Information Bulletin, copies of which are held in the Library of the House. The most recent information appears in table 1 of the issue published in June 1984. However, the information for different countries is not comparable because the definitions of prisons and prisoners vary between countries and such differences may have a substantial effect on the comparisons.
