HL Deb 30 October 1984 vol 456 c507WA
Lord Houghton of Sowerby

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they are aware that at the terrier and lurcher show held at Alsager in Staffordshire on 30th September the 1984 Shooting Times donated a special shield to be awarded to the "Best Battle-scarred Veteran Terrier of Any Variety" in the show, and whether inquiries have been made regarding the possible background of unlawful "terrier work" which includes badger-baiting.

The Minister of State, Home Office (Lord Elton)

We were not aware that such a shield had been awarded. Our attention has been drawn to the fact that illegal activities of the kind referred to may be taking place. Any person who has information that such practices are occurring should report the matter to the appropriate chief officer of police.
