asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing the number of house starts in each metropolitan district council area in West Yorkshire in the public sector and private sector for each year since 1980; and if he will make a statement.

Figures of housing starts are published for individual local authority areas in "Local Housing Statistics" for the period 1980 to 1983, copies of which are in the Library. The relevant issues are:

  • 1980 Edition 57
  • 1981 Edition 65
  • 1982 Edition 66
  • 1983 Edition 70

It is for local housing authorities to determine their own priorities for housing investment, including the building of new houses, within the total resources available to them.
