asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will announce his decision following receipt of the inspector's report on the public inquiry on the proposed A38 trunk road improvement, Saltash bypass section; and if he will make a statement.

As my hon. Friend is aware, the inspector's report has been received and is under consideration. It seems unlikely that my right hon. Friend will be able to announce a decision until early next year.

I am sure my hon. Friend will understand that, bearing in mind my right hon. Friend's statutory role, it would be inappropriate to make any further comment, but I can assure him that there will be no undue delay in coming to a decision.
