§ Mr. Jannerasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will take steps to ascertain the number of foreign students who are expected to be studying in British universities, polytechnics and other institutions of higher learning during the 1985–86 academic year, their countries of origin and their expected length of stay; and how these numbers compare with each of the previous six academic years.
§ Mr. BrookeThe Department's report on education 100, published in July, assumes that future annual totals of students from abroad taking higher education courses in Great Britain will not vary significantly from the 1983–84 level of around 45,000. The Department does not forecast students' countries of origin and information is not collected on length of stay. The most up-to-date figures for earlier years appear in DES statistical bulletin 7/84 published in June. I am sending the hon. and learned Member copies of both publications.
