HC Deb 26 October 1984 vol 65 cc757-8W
Sir Ian Gilmour

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what steps he will take to deal with the nuisance caused by motor cycles which have had their exhausts modified in order to make more noise; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ridley

Tampering with the exhaust system of a motor cycle in the way suggested by my right hon. Friend is already an offence, and enforcement is a matter for the police. Regulations introduced in May require all replacement exhaust systems for motor cycles first used after 1 January 1985 to bear a British standard marking or a clear reference to their make and type, so as to indicate that the exhaust is appropriate to the machine. The British standard requires exhausts to be tamper-resistant as far as is compatible with maintenance and installation requirements.
