HC Deb 24 October 1984 vol 65 c632W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the latest cost estimate of the Falklands airport at Mount Pleasant.

Sir George Young

The current estimate of the value of the airfield works at Mount Pleasant is approximately £250 million. The increase over the figure of £215 million announced by the Secretary of State for Defence in June 1983 reflects the addition of work to enable the joint Service use of as many facilities as possible and the conversion of the contractor's camp to provide most of the additional living accommodation required by the Army. These additions have enabled substantial savings to be made in the capital cost of the further works for the Mount Pleasant garrison announced by the Secretary of State for Defence on 21 September 1984. The increase in the airfield estimate also covers some changes in detailed requirements and in electrical and other services.
