§ Mr. Willie W. Hamiltonasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what representations he has had from the Scottish Daily Newspaper Society against the imposition of value added tax on newspapers and magazines; and what was the nature of his reply.
§ Mr. HayhoeI have noted press reports about representations on this subject being made by the Scottish Daily Newspaper Society but they have not yet reached me. When they do I will reiterate that although the Government are committed to a shift in the burden of taxation from taxes on earnings to taxes on spending, we have no set views at present on how this might best be done.
