HC Deb 27 November 1984 vol 68 cc467-8W
67. Mr. Speed

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the entitlement to benefit of a full-time student over 18 years of age living away from home with no dependants and no income or parental support.

Mr. Whitney

I assume my hon. Friend is referring to supplementary benefit and housing benefit. A full-time student over 18 years of age, living away from home with no dependants and no income or parental support, is excluded from supplementary benefit during term time because he is not available for work, with the exception of disabled students with restricted job prospects. During vacations he can claim benefit subject to the normal rules. He will be entitled to housing benefit throughout the academic year according to the level of his rent and/or rates.
