asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many houses, flats and bedsitters are owned by the National Health Service; and what is their total market value.

Mr. John Patten

The NHS in England owns some 100,000 units of staff residential accommodation of which over 20,000 are houses and flats and over 70,000 are bedsitter or hostel type accommodation. The total market value has been estimated to be in the region of £1,100 million.
