HC Deb 23 November 1984 vol 68 cc325-6W
Mr. Kennedy

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services whether he will make available the extra £1 million needed to produce raw blood plasma if the United Kingdom is to become self-sufficient in blood products by 1986.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

There are a number of methods by which plasma can be collected to achieve the targets set for self-sufficiency. Each regional health authority must decide which methods to adopt and provide the necessary funding.

Regional health authorities are being asked to apply to plasma collection all income derived from the handling charges that we introduced recently for blood and blood products supplies to non-NHS hospitals.
