Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for Defence on how many occasions during the last 12 months the British military attaché in Mexico has visited Nicaragua; for what purposes; and whom he met there.

Mr. Stanley

The military attaché Mexico City has visited Nicaragua five times in the last 12 months. The visits were made as part of his military attaché liaison duties and included meetings with members of the Nicaraguan Government and officials, foreign attaches and diplomats, and various other visitors, including business men.

Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what are the responsibilities of the British military attaché in Mexico; and which countries he covers.

Mr. Stanley

The British military attaché Mexico City undertakes representational duties, promotes the sale of British defence equipment and advises the ambassador in each country to which he is accredited on military matters. He is resident in Mexico, but is accredited also to El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.
