HC Deb 22 November 1984 vol 68 cc249-50W
44. Mr. Maclennan

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has reviewed the current establishment levels and deployment of the Metropolitan police; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Giles Shaw

My right hon. and learned Friend has told the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis that the Metropolitan police will be allowed an additional 50 police and 132 civilian posts during the financial year 1985–86. This will bring the police establishment to 27,165 and the civil staff ceiling to 13,882, representing increases of 576 and 832 respectively since 1982. On 30 September 1984 the police strength was 26,779 and the civil staff strength was 13,301.

The deployment of officers is a matter for the Commissioner, but he agrees an overall policing strategy for the metropolis with the Home Secretary as police authority.
