asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what action has been taken to update and expand the library service of the civil defence college.

Mr. Giles Shaw

Expenditure on books and periodicals has risen from £1,635 in 1983–84 to an estimated £3,000 in 1984–85. Further improvements are planned, including structural alterations and arrangements for accessing data from other sources.

Mr. Sayeed

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many directing and tutorial staff are currently employed at the Civil Defence college; and how many of these have had a full-time career in the services or police.

Mr. Giles Shaw

There are 17 directing and tutorial staff; of these 10 have had full-time careers in the services or the police and a further two are on secondment.
