HC Deb 21 November 1984 vol 68 c171W
Sir David Price

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what steps he has taken to ensure that wine sold by the glass is sold only in standard measures; and whether he intends further action.

Mr. Fletcher

A voluntary code of practice for measures of wine sold by the glass in licensed premises came into operation on 1 May 1984 following agreement by all the main trade organisations representing the interests of brewers, licensed victuallers, hoteliers, restauranteurs and caterers. The code provides that establishments must choose no more than two sizes, to be chosen from either an imperial or metric range based on legal capacity measures.

A report setting out the findings of recent surveys by trading standards officers on the adoption of the code has been made available to the sponsoring bodies and I hope that, as a result, recognition and use of the code's provisions will become more widespread.
